Commandment # 7
Do Not Commit Adultery
Adultery is having sex with someone when one or both people are married to someone else.
This sort of act greatly damages a marriage relationship as it breaks the trust that is between the 2 people. God wants us to be having good relationships, which is what the second half of the commandments is all about – our relationships with each other.
World View
We can all see the world view of sex and relationships. There are a whole heap of movies that we watch or TV shows where adultery takes place and at times it is not seen as such a bad thing. The world tells us that adultery is not really a big issue, but in God’s eyes it is.
Just as Jesus addressed the issue of murder, he also addresed the issue of adultery in the new testament. Have a look at Matthew 5:27-30.
He says that those who look lustfully at another person commit sin. This is not having sex, but it is unfaithful, for just like murder, it begins in the heart. It is our attitudes which are the beginning of the problem and Jesus is trying to express this in what he is saying.
What About Those Not Married?
This is obviously not a problem for those who are not married, but how can you, whilst you are still single or even going out with someone set up patterns for good relationships in the future?
What about flirting with someone while you are dating someone else?
What is your attitude towards marriage – do you see it as a lifelong promise or just something that you can opt out of when it does not suit you any longer?
Are you a faithful friend in all areas of your relationships?
